Nano-Bio Manufacturing Consortium Selects Wearable Sensor Patch Subsystem Project as First to Receive Funding

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nano-Bio Manufacturing Consortium (NBMC) has selected a proposal by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to develop a wearable sensor patch subsystem as its first project in its mission to develop human performance-monitoring electronics. The project has $450,000 in total funding. Fifty percent will come from NBMC's U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) funds, and the remaining 50 percent will be contributed by the winning team of UMass Amherst and its industrial partner, GE.

This project, which also includes work done by the University of Cincinnati, focuses on the integration of the most mature system subcomponents in order to provide a deliverable demonstration of a microfluidic subsystem capable of time-gated acquisition of a sweat sample, along with detection of the target biomarker Orexin-A. Orexin-A is a naturally occurring neuropeptide hormone released by the hypothalamus, and plays a crucial role in the stability of arousal and alertness. A wearable paper-based patch incorporating this technology would ideally provide valuable data regarding wearer fatigue.

"This research could have profound implications not only for military use, but for any high-stress job in which alertness and responsiveness are critical," said Scott Miller, Lab Manager for Nanostructures and Surfaces at GE Global Research.  "Physical and mental fatigue can be a big issue for those who work as jet pilots, air traffic controllers, fire fighters, heavy-equipment operators, and in many other careers.  It's a safety issue, and the earlier we can detect fatigue, the earlier it can be addressed.  At GE, we are working to help solve this tough challenge."

Based on assessment of the challenges associated with various sensor options, the project's primary development centers on an interdigitated field effect transistor (FET) sensor. This technology has already demonstrated performance for Orexin-A detection from blood and saliva samples and offers the lowest-risk system integration. The team is also developing, as a close alternative, a radio-frequency (RF) impedance sensor that may offer higher stability and sensitivity.

According to Dr. Benjamin J. Leever, Flexible Materials & Devices Program Manager at AFRL, "Biosensors are of significant interest to the Air Force due to their exceptional sensitivity for a wide variety of molecules and biomarkers, including Orexin-A, which is the focus of the NBMC project led by UMass.  Better understanding the underlying mechanisms and maturing the technology could have broad applicability beyond this particular device and could enable new capabilities that strengthen the Air Force."

The project team's technical lead is Dr. James J. Watkins from the UMass Dept. of Polymer Science and Engineering, with GE's Dr. Azar Alizadeh as alternate technical representative and Laura Rea as AFRL program manager.  "UMass is known nationally and around the world for its contributions to projects that advance the status of the U.S. as a technological and economic leader," stated Dr. Watkins. "We are proud to partner with GE and the University of Cincinnati to pursue this first project for the NBMC, and look forward to reporting and demonstrating the fruits of our highly experienced team's efforts."

Malcolm Thompson, NBMC's CEO, said, "These first four funded projects, beginning with the work led by UMass, reflect innovative thinking and research methodologies that we believe have the potential to greatly impact efforts to optimize U.S. airmen's safety and effectiveness in the field, as well as to be highly valuable in non-military environments."

This process of scanning of the original hard card and reprinting on to additional cards employs advanced, FBI certified scanning technology to convert a traditional US fingerprint card (FD-258) into an electronic fingerprint record. This electronic scan is also known as LiveScan.

Once in the system, the company's state of the art laser printers reproduce exact copies of those same fingerprint records on as many additional hard cards as the user requests. These copies may be used by an applicant for most background screenings in other jurisdictions and for different regulatory agencies.

"This new service is particularly convenient for compliance officers, mortgage brokers, real estate agents, and any professional who needs to become licensed in multiple states and does not wish to travel to each state to complete an in person LiveScan or have to wait at a police station for every new state license or screening, get their prints rolled, and mail to each individual agency with the hopes that the records are not rejected for quality. We can save companies and compliance officers from wasting a lot of money, time, and avoid unnecessary headaches with this new process. I'm really excited to see this take off!" says James Timothy White, CEO.

BioLife Solutions Announces First Quarter 2014 Results and Provides Business Update

BOTHELL, Wash., May 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- BioLife Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: BLFS), a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of proprietary clinical grade hypothermic storage and cryopreservation freeze media and precision thermal shipping products for cells and tissues  ("BioLife" or the "Company"), today announced financial results for the first quarter of 2014 and a business update.

Q1 2014 Financial Summary

Core, proprietary product revenue increased by 47% over the first quarter of 2013, driven by continued adoption of HypoThermosol®, CryoStor® and BloodStor® in the biobanking, drug discovery, and regenerative medicine markets. Revenues were $2.1 million in the first quarter of 2014, a decline of 4% from the first quarter of 2013 which included one-time license revenue of $0.6 million. Excluding the impact of the license revenue in 2013, revenue from product sales increased 33% in the first quarter of 2014 compared with the first quarter of 2013. Gross margin was 44% in the first quarter of 2014 compared with 52% in the prior period. Excluding the impact of the license revenue that had no corresponding cost, gross margin in the first quarter of 2013 would have been 33%, with year-over-year improvement due to the strong growth in our high margin proprietary product revenue. Operating loss was $0.4 million compared to operating income of $0.2 million in the first quarter of 2013, which included the positive impact of one time license revenue of $0.6 million. Mike Rice, BioLife's President & CEO, said, "During the first quarter, in addition to again exceeding $1 million in sales of our proprietary clinical grade biopreservation media products, we completed a transformational set of financial transactions. We have substantially improved our balance sheet by eliminating all debt and closing  a $15.4 million equity raisethat we believe will provide us with growth capital. We also completed a successful uplisting to the NASDAQ Capital Market®, which we believe will generate increased interest in our stock, allow us to attract more institutional investors and improve liquidity for shareholders. We are currently using some of this capital to expand our sales and marketing teams, attend additional scientific and trade conferences, and launch new organic and externally sourced products and services."

Other Significant Achievements for the First Quarter of 2014

The United States Patent and Trademark Office issued the Company a new patent on February 4, 2014. Patent number 8,642,255, titled "MATERIALS AND METHODS FOR HYPOTHERMIC COLLECTION OF WHOLE BLOOD", includes claims related to hypothermic preservation and storage of whole blood and blood components using the Company's HypoThermosol cell and tissue storage/shipping medium. We announced that Parcell Laboratories has adopted BioLife's CryoStor clinical grade cell and tissue freeze media for use in future clinical trials of Early Lineage Adult (ELA) stem cell therapies, for which Parcell holds an exclusive worldwide license. Adaptimmune Ltd adopted the Company's CryoStor clinical grade cell and tissue freeze media for use in Adaptimmune's current phase I/II clinical trial CT Antigen TCR-Engineered T Cells for Myeloma. With this announcement, Adaptimmune joined the growing list of BioLife customers developing adoptive immunotherapies for various cancers. The cancer immunotherapy field was selected by the editors of Science magazine as the Breakthrough of the Year for 2013.Contract Manufacturing Services Update and Estimated Impact to 2014 Results

We completed manufacturing products for the most recent purchase order from our contract manufacturing services customer in April 2014. Subsequently, we were informed that this customer does not intend to issue us any significant new purchase orders. We have not received any notice of termination of the manufacturing services agreement nor any breach of performance and we believe that we have met all of the performance requirements in the manufacturing services agreement with this customer.

Since the Company expects no further significant business from this customer and to enable the broadest operating freedom, on May 8, 2014, we provided this customer with notice of termination of the manufacturing services agreement dated December 22, 2011.  The agreement's termination is anticipated to be effective on or about November 5, 2014, which is 180 days after the date of our notice. The agreement bars us from manufacturing or selling any solution that is approved for clinical use related to the storage and transportation of human organs for a period of two years after termination (the "tail period"). We do not expect the tail period restriction to affect our core proprietary business or our ability to pursue other non-conflicting contract manufacturing opportunities in any way.

We expect to record revenue of approximately $0.1 million related to the remainder of the most recent purchase order in the second quarter of 2014, and no further revenue subsequent to that. Based on our historical run rate of revenue and costs, assuming this customer would have otherwise generated an additional $3 million in contract manufacturing revenue during the year ended December 31, 2014, the loss of this customer is expected to result in a reduction in gross profit of approximately $0.3 million and non-absorption of up to $0.7 million in certain manufacturing overhead costs for the year ending December 31, 2014. The financial effect on the Company of this contract termination may be mitigated if the related overhead costs can be reduced or reallocated to other products, such as our existing or new core products or new contract manufacturing relationships. In contrast, we expect an increase in overall gross margin percentage related to products reflecting the reduction in materials and supplies required to manufacture the contract manufactured product.

Mike Rice commented by stating, "The contract manufacturing relationship with this customer has been a great opportunity for BioLife to utilize the excess manufacturing capacities of our best-in-class Bothell cGMP production facility. While we will continue to pursue new contract manufacturing opportunities as an important component of our business, the primary strategic focus of our resources will be to support of expansion of our core business, such as the successful launch of biologistexSM, our new cloud-based information service for controlled temperature containers for cells and tissues together with SAVSU Technologies, Inc. ("SAVSU") We are currently working with SAVSU to finalize the financial, technical and legal aspects of the biologistex product line, including whether the products will be owned and marketed by BioLife or by another entity, in which BioLife and SAVSU may hold an interest.  We believe this represents a significant growth opportunity for us.  biologistex is complementary with our proprietary biopreservation media products and we are now recruiting additional sales and marketing professionals to drive adoption of our entire biopreservation tools portfolio."

2014 Outlook

Management believes that awareness and adoption of the Company's products will continue to grow. In addition to the Company's NASDAQ uplisting and debt conversion which have already been achieved, specific corporate goals for 2014 include:

Proprietary, core product revenue growth in 2014 of 25%-35% over the prior year. Drive adoption of SAVSU precision thermal shippers for cells and tissues via our recently announced biologistex service. Introduction of new packaging alternatives for our biopreservation media products. Gaining additional regenerative medicine customers. Increased adoption of HypoThermosol in the hair transplantation market. The Company will host a conference call and live webcast at 4:30 p.m. ET this afternoon. To access the webcast, log on to the Investor Relations page of the BioLife Solutions website at www.biolifesolutions.com. Alternatively, you may access the live conference call by dialing (844) 825-0512 (U.S. & Canada) or (315) 625-6880 (International) with the following Conference ID:   43687830. OptiScan Biomedical Enrolls First Patient in Pivotal U.S. Clinical Study of OptiScanner® 5000

HAYWARD, Calif., April 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- OptiScan Biomedical Corporation, a developer of innovative continuous monitoring systems for use in the intensive care unit (ICU), today announced the enrollment of the first patient in a pivotal, multi-center Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical study of the OptiScanner® 5000.  The OptiScanner 5000 is the company's first-of-its-kind automated, bedside glucose monitoring system that provides physicians with critical information to manage patient glucose levels in the ICU.

The pivotal trial, known as the MANAGE IDE Study (Manual vs. Automated moNitoring Accuracy of GlucosE IDE), is expected to enroll 200 patients at up to 10 sites, most of which will be located in the U.S.  The study's initial three clinical sites include: Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO; Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA; and Saint Luke's Mid-America Heart Institute in Kansas City, MO.  If successful, the MANAGE IDE study will serve as the basis for an application for approval in the U.S.

The OptiScanner 5000 represents a significant advancement in the delivery of care to ICU patients by automating the measurement of patients' plasma glucose, as opposed to current manual measurement of glucose in whole blood.  It is estimated that approximately 20 percent of ICU patients have pre-existing diabetes and an additional 40 to 60 percent of ICU patients suffer from "stress hyperglycemia" or a temporary elevation of glucose levels, with all of these patients requiring accurate glucose monitoring to maintain glycemic control.

"The initiation of this pivotal study of the OptiScanner 5000 represents a key milestone for OptiScan as we continue our efforts to bring the paradigm-shifting potential of this platform to critically ill patients and those ICU physicians responsible for their care," said Peter Rule, chairman and chief executive officer of OptiScan Biomedical. "There is an acute need for breakthrough technologies that enable the automated, real-time monitoring of blood glucose in ICU patients in order to combat both the hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia that further complicate their already challenging health conditions.  Our extensive clinical research to date demonstrates the OptiScanner 5000's ability to safely and effectively meet these needs and we are eager to see the MANAGE IDE trial further corroborate those findings."

This pivotal MANAGE IDE study follows OptiScan's previously completed MANAGE I and MANAGE II trials, which were conducted at two world class European research centers and evaluated the OptiScanner 5000 in very sick ICU patients.  Taken together, these studies represent the most comprehensive clinical validation program conducted to date with a continuous blood monitoring platform in the critical care setting.  Results from these studies demonstrated the ability of the OptiScanner 5000 to combine accurate blood glucose measurement with the convenience of continuous, real-time bedside monitoring.

Based on previous studies, the OptiScanner 5000 has received CE Mark certification for use in the European Union, allowing it to be sold and marketed in the 30 countries that make up the European Economic Area (EEA).  OptiScan has initiated commercial efforts in the EU in 2014.

About the OptiScanner® 5000

The OptiScanner® 5000 is a first-of-its-kind automated, bedside glucose monitoring system that provides physicians with information on glucose levels in the ICU. Through automated monitoring of a patient's glucose values in plasma (as opposed to whole blood), the OptiScanner has alarms to alert clinicians to the existence of hyperglycemia (values that are too high) and hypoglycemia (values that are too low).  It is estimated that between 60-80% of all ICU patients suffer from elevated glucose values, requiring insulin delivery and frequent glucose monitoring.

About OptiScan Biomedical

OptiScan Biomedical is the world leader in developing innovative continuous monitoring systems for use in hospital intensive care units (ICU).  The company has developed the OptiScanner® 5000, a first-of-its-kind automated, bedside glucose monitoring system that provides accurate, automated monitoring of patients' glucose levels measured in plasma, as opposed to whole blood.  The system prominently displays glucose level trend data updated every 15 minutes to help manage patients' glucose levels within an optimum target range.

The company is currently developing a next-generation OptiScanner product.  The OptiScanner 6000 will expand the glucose monitoring capability of the platform technology to include monitoring of two leading measures of cardiac output and oxygenation (hemoglobin and ScvO2) in the same single blood sample, thereby providing additional information about the condition of a critically ill patient.

NexID First To Offer "Liveness Detection" Software For Mobile Devices

WASHINGTON, March 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As mobile device manufacturers embed fingerprint ID into millions of smartphones, NexID Biometrics today introduces its Mobile Live Finger Detection (LFD) software, the first liveness detection solution designed specifically to exceed the convenience and security needs of mobile users worldwide.  The software provides authentication rates as high as 94-97 percent, offering the highest levels of "spoof-proofing" software available on the market today.

NexID developed the Mobile LFD software solution specifically for mobile devices.  Due to the variety of fingerprint-scanning solutions on the market, the company designed the software to be technology agnostic so it could work with all fingerprint sensors and mobile devices, while achieving fast execution times and resource efficiency.

The Mobile LFD software resides in a mobile device and detects whether an image captured by the device's fingerprint sensor is detecting a finger from a living person or if it's a fake or "spoofed" fingerprint.

Adding live finger detection enhances the device's security and helps eliminate unlocking a phone or one of its applications that may contain confidential information.  As evidenced with Apple's iPhone 5S TouchID, fingerprint sensors are actually highly vulnerable to hacking without some form of liveness detection.

NexID will introduce Mobile LFD here this week in Booth #202 at the Connect: ID Expo, where company executives will discuss and illustrate fingerprint spoofing techniques and fake finger detection.  Additionally, Clarkson University professor and NexID co-owner, Dr. Stephanie Schuckers, will be speaking at the conference at 1:50 p.m. today on the topic of "Fake Fingers and Stolen Templates: Topics in Biometric Security."

"Two of the world's leading mobile device makers now include fingerprint identification on their devices, so it doesn't take a crystal ball to see that trend continuing," said NexID COO Mark Cornett.  "We believe every mobile device will incorporate some type of fingerprint ID functionality in the next couple of years. And with people relying more and more on their devices, the security of personal, financial, health and business information is not just needed, it's imperative. "

For example, businesses contemplating adopting Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programs face the need to ensure company information on mobile devices remains private and secure; meanwhile, employees may opt for more convenience to access phone features on the same devices.  Mobile LFD offers a sliding scale of security for fingerprint ID on smartphones, allowing for a simple and flexible solution.

NexID said its Mobile LFD can immediately enhance the myriad of fingerprint ID solutions being developed by sensor manufacturers, mobile devices companies, and application developers.  Fingerprint sensor companies can embed the software directly onto a sensor's chip (LFD on chip), and device manufacturers can add it to the main processor (LFD on host), all to provide customers with a convenient alternative to traditional PINs and passwords. NexID's Mobile LFD solution can also be embedded in "trust zone" or trusted execution environment chip sets.

The Mobile LFD SDK will be distributed free for evaluation, solution integration, and testing purposes.  NexID also offers professional services to assist with the solution integration process.  Licensing and distribution agreements are negotiated separately.

For more information on NexID Mobile LFD, please visit www.nexidbiometrics.com.  A white paper on liveness detection, including examples of how the company researches and tests different "spoofing" techniques, is also available.

About NexID Biometrics
NexID Biometrics is a leading software and technology supplier to the biometric authentication industry. The company develops and licenses liveness detection software that enables fingerprint-scanning technologies to more accurately, and with greater confidence, authenticate scanned images by mitigating spoof-related risks. The company also provides testing and analysis of fingerprint scanning devices to identify existing vulnerabilities to known spoofing strategies. The company's founders represent some of the world's leading authorities on biometric spoof mitigation and liveness detection.

Vapor Corp. Unveils E-Cigarette Industry's First Biometric Technology

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- from ShowStoppers @ CES 2014 – Vapor Corp. (OTCQB: VPCOD) today announced its Vapor X personalized, rechargeable vaporizer unit will become available to consumers with patent pending fingerprint lock technology in time for the 2014 holiday retail season. There will be a working prototype and early iteration of the product to try today during ShowStoppers at CES 2014, Booth # A5.

In 2013 every corner of the country weighed in on the newest options in alternative smoking devices, making it clear that traditional smoking is on its way to being replaced by "vaping." Now Vapor Corp., a leading publically traded "pure-play" company in the electronic cigarette market, is answering the question on everyone's mind: what comes next?

"The next trend in alternative smoking devices is the personalized vaporizer that incorporates the technology that we expect from our high-end tech devices. Today we are debuting the newest technology in this space," says Kevin Frija, CEO of Vapor Corp. "By incorporating this biometric user identity technology into the Vapor X personal vaporizer, the door is opened to many customizable features.  The fingerprint lock security allows customers to protect their device from use by another individual and this same technology will lead to the development of additional features and controls," continues Frija. "Much like the fitness mobile app technology we have seen gain recent popularity, vaporizer users will soon be able to download their 'vaping' statistics through a corresponding mobile application in order to track exactly how often they use the device."

Vaporizers are the rechargeable, customizable, high-end cousin of the disposable electronic cigarette. The Vapor X with patent pending fingerprint lock technology will incorporate biometric technologies in order to keep the device locked and turned off unless the authorized user is present. When first purchased, the device will require an authorized user to be assigned through a fingerprint scan. Once this user is assigned, he or she is the only person who can activate the device. This will not only protect against minors being able to turn on the device, but it will deem the device useless in the case of theft.

Vapor Corp.'s Vapor X personalized, rechargeable vaporizer unit will become available with patent pending fingerprint lock technology in the second half of 2014 to consumers via online and through authorized dealers nationwide.  The device will retail for between $199 and $299.

FacialNetwork.com Announces Beta Release Of "NameTag" The First Real-Time Facial Recognition App For Google Glass

NameTag - Google Glass Facial Recognition Beta App Demonstration.jwplayer.key="2kY/GKwZ2uQZmDlQ9VYArfZt2b4+KhHX3+DM4zisgtE=";DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS, Nev., Dec. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The real world is about to become a much more connected place. Utilizing some of the most accurate facial recognition software in the world, NameTag can spot a face using Google Glass' camera, send it wirelessly to a server, compare it to millions of records and in seconds return a match complete with a name, additional photos and social media profiles.

FacialNetwork.com, the developer of NameTag, is also currently creating technology to allow the scanning of profile photos from dating sites such as PlentyOfFish.com, OkCupid.com and Match.com. The technology will allow users to scan photos against the more than 450,000 entries in the National Sex Offender Registry and other criminal databases.

"I believe that this will make online dating and offline social interactions much safer and give us a far better understanding of the people around us," said NameTag's creator Kevin Alan Tussy.  "It's much easier to meet interesting new people when we can simply look at someone, see their Facebook, review their LinkedIn page or maybe even see their dating site profile. Often we were interacting with people blindly or not interacting at all. NameTag on Google Glass can change all that."

No longer will social media be limited to the screens of desktops, tablets and smartphones.  With the NameTag app running on Google Glass a user can simply glance at someone nearby and instantly see that person's name, occupation and even visit their Facebook, Instagram or Twitter profiles in real-time.

Tussy explains, "People will soon be able to login to www.NameTag.ws and choose whether or not they want their name and information displayed to others.  It's not about invading anyone's privacy; it's about connecting people that want to be connected. We will even allow users to have one profile that is seen during business hours and another that is only seen in social situations. NameTag can make the big, anonymous world we live in as friendly as a small town."

NameTag is currently available on Glass for Beta testers and expects its website and app to launch in Q1 2014 and hopes it can be officially available to Google Glass users as well.

"Making Real-Time Facial Recognition work on Glass hasn't been easy, but we did it.  Now, the question isn't if we will support Glass; it's will Google support us?" said Tussy.

Google has announced that facial recognition will not yet be supported for Glass; undoubtedly due to pressure from privacy groups but FacialNetwork.com believes that by providing applications with such vast societal benefits, Google will eventually reconsider.

"There will be many providers of augmented reality headsets and even if facial recognition is not supported by some, I'm confident that there will be solutions for such limitations. We are not publishing any information about of our financiers or investors at this time but I will say that we are involved with some very well-respected individuals and Venture Funds," said Tussy.

90 Minute DNA Results, A First Of Its Kind, Coming To Bensalem

LORTON, Va., Nov. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bensalem Township Police Department, in conjunction with Bode Technology, is launching a new initiative in the field of DNA testing.  This pilot program known as "BodeHITS - Rapid DNA" will be the first of its kind in the country for law enforcement.

Bensalem Township Police Department currently has its own local DNA database with over 6,000 DNA profiles consisting of evidence and reference/individual samples.  Bensalem's local DNA database has been in existence since 2010 and DNA testing and analysis has played a role in over 100 criminal investigations.  Many of these cases with DNA evidence were property crimes where DNA testing was traditionally not feasible.

Having a local database has guaranteed DNA analysis and results within a 30 day period.  This turnaround time has led to the ability to investigate crimes much more efficiently, rather than waiting the six to nine months it would take to previously obtain DNA results. Bode Technology is located in Lorton, VA and currently maintains and analyzes all of Bensalem's DNA profiles.

The BodeHITS-Rapid DNA™ initiative will take DNA testing to the next level.  This program will provide Bensalem Police the ability to have real time results with their DNA samples.  The turnaround time for DNA results under this program is 90 minutes.  The Rapid DNA testing implemented by Bode and enabled by Life Technologies products and services is the first of their kind in the field - in that it can test DNA evidence from a crime scene.  Currently, there are several other police departments in the country evaluating rapid DNA instruments; however, those instruments are only validated for single source reference/individual samples.  Additionally, those instruments only have the ability to test five samples per batch, whereas with BodeHITS - Rapid DNA, the capacity is 18 samples per batch.  This rapid program is also comparing all new DNA profiles to the already existing 6,000 DNA profiles in Bensalem's local database.  The goal is to generate near, real-time DNA matches to generate probable cause arrests from active criminals in active investigations.

The BodeHITS - Rapid DNA program with Bensalem is taking place at Bensalem Township Police headquarters.  Bode Technology provided the services and a forensic scientist; Life Technologies, the market leader in DNA testing systems, provided 3500xL Genetic Analyzer, AmpFLSTR® Identifiler® PCR Amplification Kits and ongoing support required to perform DNA testing. Bode is also offering reach back support to review DNA HITS.

"From the streets to results in 90 minutes"
