The expanded test gives clinicians additional, objective information, based on patients' own genetics to help determine their potential response to a broad list of medications commonly prescribed across four key therapeutic areas, including pain, mental health, addiction and cardiovascular therapy.

Millennium PGT now analyzes clinically relevant genetic variants for 11 genes related to medication response to help clinicians individualize prescribing decisions. The Millennium Analysis of Patient Phenotype (MAPP®) Report provides clinicians with evidence based and clinically actionable information to support medication decisions for over 30 commonly prescribed medications across 14 medication classes. The MAPP Report also includes information for 20 medications with pharmacogenetic information or specific recommendations related to use in their U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved labels.

The New York Genome Center And IBM Watson Group Announce Collaboration To Advance Genomic Medicine

NEW YORK, March 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York Genome Center (NYGC) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced an initiative to accelerate a new era of genomic medicine with the use of IBM's Watson cognitive system. IBM and NYGC will test a unique Watson prototype designed specifically for genomic research as a tool to help oncologists deliver more personalized care to cancer patients.

NYGC and its medical partner institutions plan to initially evaluate Watson's ability to help oncologists develop more personalized care to patients with glioblastoma, an aggressive and malignant brain cancer that kills more than 13,000 people in the U.S. each year. Despite groundbreaking discoveries into the genetic drivers of cancers like glioblastoma, few patients benefit from personalized treatment that is tailored to their individual cancer mutations. Clinicians lack the tools and time required to bring DNA-based treatment options to their patients and to do so, they must correlate data from genome sequencing to reams of medical journals, new studies and clinical records -- at a time when medical information is doubling every five years.

This joint NYGC Watson initiative aims to speed up this complex process, identifying patterns in genome sequencing and medical data to unlock insights that will help clinicians bring the promise of genomic medicine to their patients. The combination of NYGC's genomic and clinical expertise coupled with the power of IBM's Watson system will enable further development and refinement of the Watson tool with the shared goal of helping medical professionals develop personalized cancer care.

The new cloud-based Watson system will be designed to analyze genetic data along with comprehensive biomedical literature and drug databases. Watson can continually 'learn' as it encounters new patient scenarios, and as more information becomes available through new medical research, journal articles and clinical studies. Given the depth and speed of Watson's ability to review massive databases, the goal of the collaboration is to increase the number of patients who have access to care options tailored to their disease's DNA.

First Watson Application in Genomic Research
Watson will complement rapid genome sequencing and is expected to dramatically reduce the time it takes to correlate an individual's genetic mutations with reams of medical literature, study findings, and therapeutic indications that may be relevant. The intention is to provide comprehensive information to enable clinicians to consider a variety of treatment options that the clinician can tailor to their patient's genetic mutations. It will also help NYGC scientists understand the data detailing gene sequence variations between normal and cancerous biopsies of brain tumors.

This investment to enhance the state's genomic medicine capabilities, together with NYGC's acquisition of Illumina's state-of-the-art HiSeq X Ten whole human genome sequencing system, will accelerate the availability of valuable genomic information in New York.

ZIO ® service identifies arrhythmias significantly more than the traditional Holter Monitor, according to study published online in the American Journal of medicine

SAN FRANCISCO, 02 January 2014/PRNewswire /-iRhythm Technologies, a company of services of health information, today announced that a prospective study from the Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI) has found that the use of the service of the company ZIO significantly increased detection of cardiac arrhythmias, compared to the use of the traditional Holter monitor. Findings, published and made publicly accessible online in the January issue of the American Journal of Medicine, underscore the role of the service ZIO, ZIO, patented algorithms patch and ZIO review, as the new standard for the ambulatory monitoring of patients with suspected arrhythmia.

"This is the first large prospective validation that this new technology passed the device invented by Norman Holter in 1949," said the lead author of the study, Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist who directs STSI and serves as the academic director of Scripps Health. "By tracking every beat of the heart up to two weeks, ZIO service proved to be significantly more sensitive than the Holter standard, it uses multiple threads and it is normally only used or tolerated during 24 hours.

Total wear of both devices, the service of ZIO time detected events of arrhythmia 57% more in comparison with the Holter monitor (96 against 61), mainly due to the prolonged monitoring. The doctors also reported that they reached a definitive diagnosis in 90% of cases using the ZIO service, compared with 64% with the Holter monitor. In addition, 81% of the patients reported that they preferred the ZIO patch versus the Holter monitor.

"The traditional options of monitoring heart are limited in their ability to capture the arrhythmias, which are rare and often do not have symptoms, and because they are difficult for patients to comply", said Kevin King, President and Chief Executive Officer of iRhythm. "These studies findings underscore that the ZIO service is setting a new standard for the diagnosis of arrhythmia, with a focus continuous monitoring proven, long-term which allows doctors to rule in and rule out arrhythmias before in the way of diagnosis and change the treatment of the patients."

Each year, millions of patients presenting with low common and non-specific symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, and shortness of breath, which may or may not be caused by cardiac arrhythmias. Reports estimate that the three most common types of arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation (AF), bradycardia and ventricular tachycardia - affect approximately 8 million people in the United States each year. If it is not correctly, arrhythmias can lead to serious complications such as stroke. Effective management of cardiac arrhythmia is specific to the identified type of arrhythmia. Arrhythmias, however, are often difficult to diagnose using techniques of monitoring current, that they are limited in what you can record or it can be difficult for patients to use or tolerate.
