5 Tips to Lose Weight and Save Your Heart

Our hearts are actively working twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to pump oxygenated blood around our bodies. It needs as much health and help as possible to keep this good work up, but unfortunately most of us abuse our bodies, thus causing degradation of the heart resulting in heart disease. A leading cause of heart disease is high blood pressure and high cholesterol. One of the best ways to combat high cholesterol and improve heart health is to lose weight, particularly if you are morbidly obese. Here are some tips for losing weight to ensure your heart keeps up the good work for many years to come:

1. Don't starve yourself: Many people believe that the best way to lose weight is not to eat. This is not true at all, the more often you eat the faster your metabolism will burn the food, which in turn will help you to lose weight. However, you cannot eat just anything. You need to increase your quantities of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins whilst decreasing your intake of saturated fats and carbohydrates.

2. Get moving: Although you may balk at the word 'exercise' there are many other ways to get moving. Not everyone has time to visit the gym every day but there are other ways to get active. Take a walk with your dog every day, clean your house thoroughly, join a dance class and take the stairs instead of the elevator. These are all simple ways with which to get your blood pumping and the fat melting.

3. Drink water: Most of the time, when we feel like we are starving, it is actually our bodies crying out for hydration. Not only is drinking adequate amounts of water good for your skin, it also helps you to feel fuller and eat smaller portions when you do tuck in. Try to get at least eight glasses of water in a day, especially if it is very hot or you are working out.

4. Breakfast: The one meal that is often skipped, breakfast is actually the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast kick-starts your metabolism. Avoid breakfast cereals that are high in sugar and carbohydrates.

5. Cook healthier: One of the biggest problems with food lies in its preparation. Foods that have been fried in oil or coated in spices and sauces are naturally going to be higher in fat content. Opt for steaming or boiling your food to make it healthier, and avoid adding too much salt.

Weight loss is a journey, and remember that the journey is more important than the destination. Once you start living a healthier lifestyle, you will feel and see the effects on your body and mind. Ensure that you check your heart health and cholesterol levels regularly so you can see the effects of your weight loss on your heart first hand.

HealthMed Holdings Announces New Blood Test That Identifies Individuals Who Are At Risk Of A Heart Attack

HealthMed is Enabling Prevention of Heart Disease By Early Detection. (PRNewsFoto/HealthMed Holdings)jwplayer.key="2kY/GKwZ2uQZmDlQ9VYArfZt2b4+KhHX3+DM4zisgtE=";DOHA, Qatar and IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthMed Holdings, a company dedicated to the prevention of cardiovascular disease through innovative laboratory tests in conjunction with preventive strategies, announced today that it has completed validation on a novel blood test that aims to identify individuals who are at risk of a heart attack that might be missed by conventional tests. These individuals have no symptoms and frequently have normal standard blood cholesterol profiles, but are at significant risk of having a heart attack in the near term. The group is actively commercializing the test.

The new MAP Test (Myocardial Assessment Profile) covers pathways involved in unstable cardiac lesions due to inflammation. Inflammation is the most common cause of heart attacks (up to 75%).

HealthMed Holdings Managing Partner, Douglas S. Harrington, MD, said that the test will be offered globally with a focus on nations where there has been a steep rise in cardiac disease, obesity and diabetes.

"Increasing awareness that lifestyle choices significantly determine heart attack and stroke risk, and deficiencies in current diagnostic tools miss, many individuals who go on to have a heart attack or stroke determined a need for ways to identify these individuals so preventive measures can be taken. The health care authorities in many countries are taking a proactive approach to reversing these trends," said Dr. Harrington.

About the MAP Test™
The MAP Test measures compounds in the blood associated with vascular inflammation causing unstable cardiac lesions. Measurement of these compounds in a person's serum enables identification of patients at risk of a heart attack in the near term.  The MAP Test allows physicians to more effectively manage and treat their patients to the new ACC/AHA Cardiac guidelines – aiding in the reduction and prevention of cardiac events. Used in conjunction with other clinical information, the MAP Test's easy to understand results yield better compliance and behavioral changes by patients.

About HealthMed Holdings

LG Jumps Into Fitness Tech At CES With Lifeband Touch And Heart Rate Earphones

LG Electronics logo. (PRNewsFoto/LG Electronics USA, Inc.)jwplayer.key="2kY/GKwZ2uQZmDlQ9VYArfZt2b4+KhHX3+DM4zisgtE=";LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics (LG) today took the wraps off LG Lifeband Touch and LG Heart Rate Earphones, two wearable products that mark the company's first foray into fitness tech. Unveiled at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, both products incorporate comfortable designs and compatibility with other devices so that monitoring one's health requires no additional effort beyond strapping on a watch and inserting a pair of headphone earbuds.

Lifeband Touch is a smart activity tracker that incorporates a bold yet comfortable design and is compatible with heart rate monitors (HRM) as well as smartphones. Meanwhile, the innovative Heart Rate Earphones' unique dual-function design offers a convenient way for users to measure their heart rate while exercising.  Both devices are designed to help users take greater control over their health. Lifeband Touch and Heart Rate Earphones can wirelessly link up to each other, creating a seamless wearable ecosystem. Connected to smartphones (Android and iOS supported), the devices can transmit data to the intuitive, easy-to-use LG Fitness app, or to a number of other third party apps such as MyFitnessPal, Runkeeper or MapMyFitness.

Lifeband Touch was designed to be asymmetric and flexible, providing greater comfort and style than other wearable fitness wristbands. Featuring a touch OLED panel to display time, biometrics, incoming calls and music controls, the built-in 3-axis accelerometer and altimeter allows the device to accurately measure key performance indicators such as distance, speed, number of steps, calories consumed and projected pace. All this information is visible with a swipe of a finger on the OLED display. Engineered to be lightweight and simple to use, it incorporates a unique motion-sensing algorithm that automatically turns on the display when the wearer rotates his or her wrist. Lifeband Touch also offers wireless connectivity via Bluetooth to transmit data to a smartphone or receive data from third party devices such the Heart Rate Earphones.

LG's Heart Rate Earphones feature PerformTek® sensor technology which measures blood flow signals from the auricle, the external part of the ear to capture accurate biometric data such as heart rate and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max). As a continuous heart rate monitoring device, PerformTek® has proven accurate during rigorous physical activity. LG employs a flexible ear piece design to make its Heart Rate Earphones more comfortable to use than other similar monitoring devices. A clip-on medallion connected to the earphones provides Bluetooth connectivity, enabling the unit to send data to a smartphone or the Lifeband Touch for a truly seamless experience.

"We wanted to introduce wearable fitness products that met the expectations of today's tech savvy consumers and brought something new to the table, which in our case meant exceptional design, comfort and functionality," said Jim Clayton, executive vice president of LG's New Business Division in the Home Entertainment Company. "The uniqueness of our wearable devices is that they weren't just designed for exercise but also for day-to-day use in the office or around the home. With Lifeband Touch, you can get call and text notifications sent from your smartphone while the Heart Rate Earphones are perfectly happy playing back music all day even when you're not exercising. These are much more than just fitness devices."

Lifeband Touch and Heart Rate Earphones will be available starting in the United States in the first half of 2014, to be followed by rollouts in other markets. Visitors to LG's booth at CES 2014 (Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall #8204) from January 7 through January 10 will be able to see and experience LG's newest wearable devices for themselves.
