IBM Receives Frost & Sullivan Customer Value Leadership Award for its Mobile Identity and Access Management Solutions

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of mobile authentication, Frost & Sullivan recognizes IBM with the 2014 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Leadership. Central to the company's success in generating value for customers is the integration of various mobile security, mobile identity, and access management solutions. IBM's strong value proposition with regards to the provisioning of context-based authentication for multiple mobile device types and mobile applications has also been instrumental to its success.

"When it comes to identity and access management, organizations often face a trade-off between improving security levels and delivering greater end-user convenience," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Mario Fernandez. "IBM breaks the security/end-user convenience trade-off through its IBM Security Access Manager for Mobile appliance."

The IBM Security Access Manager for Mobile appliance's risk engine determines the risk of an end user's authentication attempt by comparing it with a historical behavior profile of that user, which contains information related to the volume, type and frequency of transactions; Internet protocol reputation; geographic location; and device fingerprinting. On ascertaining the risk, the appropriate authentication method is applied. While low-risk access attempts require simple authentication methods such as a password, high-risk access attempts might involve hardware or software one-time password tokens.

To determine the appropriate authentication method, the IBM Security Access Manager for Mobile risk engine also pays heed to the application or data that the end user wants to access. For instance, if an end user wants to access a business-critical application or confidential data, then they must use an authentication method with a high degree of irrefutability. Essentially then, security becomes context-based and organizations can establish—and seamlessly enforce—access management policies without introducing greater end-user inconvenience.

The value proposition of IBM's Security Access Manager for Mobile appliance is enhanced through the integration of other IBM products, including IBM Security Access Manager for Web, which adds content security capabilities to protect against attacks such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting. Likewise, IBM's Federated Identity Manager, which supports the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), WS-Federation and OpenID standard protocols, can enable federated single sign-on. This facilitates the integration of cloud services, such as Google Apps or Office 365, which also support the above-mentioned protocols.

In a bid to remain ahead of its competitors, IBM added two important security companies and their corresponding products to its portfolio in 2013—Trusteer and Fiberlink. The company has also drawn up a future-proof product roadmap that recognizes that biometric authentication methods and contactless technologies will play a prominent role in enabling mobile access.

"Already, IBM's scientists have developed an algorithm to determine biometric-based authentication risk scores and risk analysis that can be incorporated into IBM Security Access Manager for Mobile," said Fernandez.

Frost & Sullivan Applauds Definiens' Strong Technology Portfolio for the Effective Data Analysis of Histology Images

LONDON, May 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent research on the tissue diagnostics and pathology imaging market, Frost & Sullivan presents Definiens with the 2013 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Company of the Year. In the past, Definiens focused primarily on life sciences but the company is also establishing a toehold in tissue diagnostics and clinical digital pathology. Definiens' proprietary solutions, such as Definiens Tissue Studio® and Definiens Image Miner™, have set industry benchmarks with their unique capabilities to deliver the best-in-class image interpretation and data mining. This enables the morphological features of tissue slides to be rapidly quantitated, a process Definiens refers to as tissue datafication.

Frost & Sullivan: ANZ Functional Beverages Market Offers Innovative Organic Products and New Flavours to Meet Customer Demands

SYDNEY, April 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Functional beverage manufacturers are acknowledging consumer demand for natural and organic beverages by investing in product innovation, new flavours, and the introduction of balanced nutrients and environment-friendly packages. The segments to benefit the most from this rising preference for organic beverages are sugar-free energy drinks and fortified fruit juices. The latter is especially popular in healthy diets due to its concentration of vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial micronutrients.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Analysis of the Functional Beverage Market in Australia and New Zealand, finds that the market earned revenues of $1.6 billion in 2012 and estimates this to reach $2.3 billion in 2017. The study covers the product segments of sports drinks, energy drinks, enhanced bottle water, fortified fruit juices, functional soy beverages and others (ready-to-drink (RTD) tea, RTD coffee, and RTD vegetable juice). The energy drinks segment is expected to lead through the use of healthier ingredients. While Australia is projected to experience significant growth, New Zealand is likely to grow moderately.

However, there is widespread scepticism regarding the health claims made by functional beverage manufacturers, as the benefits of some ingredients are not scientifically validated.

"Many functional beverages use health ingredients whose safety and dosage levels have not been checked, while some beverages have higher levels of a certain ingredients that could have an adverse effect on health," said Frost & Sullivan Chemicals, Materials & Food Research Analyst Yaqin Liu.

Market participants are also wary of the rising competition from private labels, as their competitive pricing strategy is causing price sensitivity among consumers. Further, margins are shrinking due to the escalating operating costs incurred on ingredients, labour and land.

Beverage manufacturers can attempt to widen their margins by improving the productivity of the plant, and reduce ingredient costs by nurturing alliances to obtain materials from all over the world. They can further increase sales by educating consumers about the specific functions and benefits of their beverages.

"Clearly, product innovation is vital to thrive in this market. Participants will gain a definite edge by establishing a strong pipeline to constantly introduce products and flavours," noted Liu. "Additionally, effective marketing campaigns, distributions channels, and pricing strategies will go a long way in boosting the market's prospects."

The World has Changed, Weakening the Security Once Afforded by Passwords, Finds Frost & Sullivan

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The strong authentication and one-time password (OTP) market is seeing steady growth due to several factors: the movement to cloud-based services; the demand for single, federated sign-on to software-as-a-service (SaaS) apps; the continuing growth of the threat landscape; open standard approaches; and innovative methods for stronger authentication. Biometrics is now the largest segment for strong authentication, with much of its momentum driven by the use of voice biometrics in call center and interactive voice response (IVR) applications.

Frost & Sullivan's new Analysis of the Strong Authentication and One-Time Password (OTP) Market finds the market earned revenue of $1.52 billion in 2013 and estimates this to reach $2.16 billion in 2018 at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 7 percent. The research notes new strong authentication methods are less expensive than the dominant hardware OTP method, fueling adoption. The analysis also finds RSA remains the largest vendor in the industry, with about one-fifth of the market revenue; however, the breadth of strong authentication methods creates a market for many players.  This research covers hard token, USB key, biometrics, and soft token/device-as-a-token solutions.

For complimentary access to more information on this research, please visit: http://bit.ly/1eNZ8Ci

The explosive increase in users and the sheer number of distinct systems in work and personal lives is highlighting the importance of convenient authentication. Otherwise, the onslaught of system credentials may push users to revert to tactics that invalidate the intended security strength of passwords. As a result, security professionals are actively seeking ways to improve the strength of user authentication on their networks.

"Cloud-based services and bring your own device (BYOD) trends, in particular, demand speedy information exchange through the cloud for business continuity, and hence, security for these applications tops the priority list in most organizations," said Frank Dickson, Network Security industry principal at Frost & Sullivan. "As an extension of remote access to a network's sensitive data, strong authentication is beneficial in credential federation."

However, existing solutions are familiar and embedded in user's routines and so the introduction of new methods will require significant investment in user education. Overcoming strictly legacy hardware token authentication is another challenge.

Vendors must realize strong authentication security is a tool that customers use to manage risk. This means they must communicate the degree to which their solution mitigates risk when compared with competing solutions. Providing a compelling cost/benefit analysis will also aid chief information security officers win budget approval for improved authentication methods.

"The strong authentication market does not have a single future but many futures, as different use cases and levels of requirements will necessitate diverse solutions," opined Dickson. "To that end, attaining technology through acquisitions or licensing is a successful strategy to address product portfolio deficiencies."

Frost & Sullivan: Growing Need to Locate People and Objects in Buildings Spurs Innovations in Indoor GPS Technology

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The need to locate humans and objects accurately in real time inside buildings is driving demand for indoor global positioning system (GPS) technology. End users across multiple segments including retail, security, marketing and gaming are adopting indoor GPS solutions for location sharing, asset tracking, emergency management, navigation, and context-aware delivery.

Frost & Sullivan's new analysis, Breakthrough Innovations in Indoor GPS, expects the indoor GPS market to reach more than $3.5 million in revenue by 2018.  This research includes key findings, benefits, challenges, participants, the value chain, techniques and approaches, analyst insights, key patents, innovations and applications, and the future of indoor GPS technology.

For more information on this research, please email Britni Myers, Corporate Communications, at britni.myers@frost.com.

The most common tools used for indoor positioning include various types of sensors and communication networks, such as Bluetooth and Wi-fi. However, these approaches lack the level of accuracy end users expect.

"The market must maintain higher levels of accuracy without increasing complexity in implementation and integration to expand its usage in critical applications," noted Frost & Sullivan Technical Insights Research Analyst Debarun Guha Thakurta. "Developers should also invest in extensive research to find new, cost-effective techniques to locate people and objects in indoor environments with optimum precision."

There is also a need to create a standard technology for indoor GPS solutions as solution providers are currently using technologies designed for other purposes, such as communication and illumination. Technology convergence and collaboration with standardization bodies is crucial to address this requirement.

"While technology developers and investors are looking to develop a unified positioning technology that delivers seamless positioning services both indoors and outdoors without the support of a GPS, the lack of individual technologies capable of ensuring optimal accuracy and coverage could lead to the convergence of multiple futuristic technologies," observed Guha Thakurta. "With the introduction of a unified positioning system, customers will be able to locate and navigate anywhere in the world with tremendous accuracy and speed, ushering in an age where literally nothing gets lost."

Breakthrough Innovations in Indoor GPS, a part of the Technical Insights (http://www.technicalinsights.frost.com) subscription, covers the innovations in the indoor GPS technology market along with its potential to converge with other futuristic technologies to create a comprehensive unified positioning solution. This analysis also includes detailed technology analysis and industry trends evaluated following extensive interviews with market participants.

Frost & Sullivan Commends NEC for Taking Facial Recognition Biometrics to the Mainstream Market

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the strong authentication market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes NEC with the 2014 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Leadership. NEC has made the most of the demand for strong and user-friendly methods for user authentication to introduce facial recognition biometrics in mainstream commercial applications. NEC's NeoFace product offering includes NEC's core facial recognition capabilities, such as image processing, face detection, quality assessment, template encoding, and matching. It is available as either a "SDK" or "Appliance" for integration in facial recognition solutions.

The proliferation of mobile devices with front-facing cameras and powerful processors, along with organizations' open standards approach, has given a boost to the adoption of NEC's facial recognition authentication solutions. NEC has leveraged its 40 years of accrued expertise and proven facial recognition core technology to develop solutions for a number of investigation, mobility, and surveillance applications.

"NEC's NeoFace suite of products offers a high degree of irrefutability and the flexibility to be applied to a number of compelling use cases, making it ideal to address the need for strong authentication, as well as identification," said Frost & Sullivan Industry Principal Frank Dickson. "Demonstrated by NeoFace Reveal's success in identification, NEC's face-matching algorithms ensure accuracy and selectivity, regardless of database size and image quality. Additionally, the use of facial recognition biometrics removes the need for one-time password (OTP) devices that are often required for strong authentication."

NeoFace has been validated by comprehensive testing conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), with tests ranging from one-to-one verification to large-scale, high-volume identification matching. NEC's facial recognition technology was ranked number one in the Biometric Grand Challenge's (MBGC) "Still Face Challenge," carried out by NIST and commissioned by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in 2009.

Apart from providing a high degree of irrefutability, authentication also needs to be flexible, cost-effective and convenient. As facial recognition biometrics can be offered on almost all of the mobile devices in the market today, it saves companies the cost of supplying specialty devices such as OTP tokens. Not only does it do away with multiple steps for authentications, facial recognition is easy for administrators to implement and has high adoption rates among the users.

"Overall, with a pragmatic product roadmap, Frost & Sullivan expects NEC to make facial recognition biometrics a market reality in mainstream commercial applications for authentication and in government applications for identification," noted Dickson.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in implementing strategies that proactively create value for its customers with a focus on improving the return on the investment that customers make in its services or products. The Customer Value Leadership Award recognizes the company's inordinate focus on enhancing the value that its customers receive, beyond simply good customer service, leading to improved customer retention and, ultimately, customer base expansion.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.

Frost & Sullivan: Integration of Biometrics in Consumer Electronics a Fast-Emerging Trend

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- While the adoption of biometrics has been concentrated in the government sector, market dynamics are shifting, as these technologies find increasing use in consumer electronic products. Many computers and laptops already use biometrics, and several tier-one manufacturers are now looking to introduce biometrics into devices, such as mobile phones, to distinguish their high-end products in the market.

According to the new analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.technicalinsights.frost.com), Innovations in Biometrics for Consumer Electronics, fingerprint recognition will remain the leading biometric technology used in consumer electronics due to its convenience, cost-efficiency and quick ROI. Iris recognition and multimodal biometrics will rapidly grow in the next three years due to their accuracy, although the high cost and large size of iris recognition systems may hinder widespread uptake. Voice and face recognition technologies likewise should find higher usage depending on the security requirement of the application.

"The acquisition of Authentec by Apple has kick-started the biometrics trend in consumer electronics and Samsung has also filed for biometric patents, indicating the company's interest in incorporating biometric scanning into its devices," said Technical Insights Research Analyst Mousumi Dasgupta. "With the world's two most popular smartphone manufacturers employing biometric sensors, all major mobile manufacturers are likely to soon follow suit."

However, large-scale implementation may only occur when more established, cheaper biometric solutions are available, given that high costs deter end users. Further, biometric features are still not considered essential on consumer electronics, and customers who do use these usually opt for less expensive alternatives, such as pass codes and tokens. As such, the launch of innovative, affordable biometrically enabled products will be vital to boost installations.

The lack of standardization reduces the ability of biometric software to function across consumer electronic devices, as various devices have different operating systems and versions. Establishing standards will be crucial to allow the use of biometric technologies with minimal integration.

"The capabilities of near field communication and cloud computing can be combined with biometrics to explore new market opportunities in mobile commerce applications," concluded Dasgupta. "In fact, mobile network operators and cloud service providers are expected to enter the biometrics for consumer electronics market to fully utilize the security and convenience offered by biometrics."

Frost & Sullivan Honours Cognitec for Blazing Trails in the Face Biometrics Market with its FaceVACS-VideoScan Technology

LONDON, Nov. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent research on the face biometrics market, Frost & Sullivan presents Cognitec Systems GmbH with the 2013 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Leadership. Cognitec's blinkers-on focus on face biometrics earned the company strong domain expertise, which has allowed it to develop its flagship face recognition technology, FaceVACS-VideoScan.

FaceVACS-VideoScan analyses live video streams or video footage for information based on facial data. This face recognition data can be a great help in operations management and marketing departments, as well as security applications.

"In operations, the solution can be used to track real-time people movement, detect lines, and direct traffic flows to ease bottlenecks. In marketing, it can be used to generate highly accurate people counts in a retail store, as the advanced face recognition technology ensures that a face is not counted twice," said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Ram Ravi. "The FaceVACS-VideoScan system can also be used to generate useful statistical data such as age, gender, and other demographic information." Additionally, it can be used in airports and train stations to manage people flow and prevent overcrowding.

The solution can correlate live images with the ones stored in photo databases. This is highly useful in security applications, as the solution can alert security staff when people of interest are automatically identified.

Along with the FaceVACS-VideoScan system, Cognitec offers the FaceVACS-PortraitAcquisition and FaceVACS-DBScan solutions. FaceVACS PortraitAcquisition aids the assessment and acquisition of digital images for ID documents, such as drivers' licenses, passports, and visas. It allows the user to capture images for ID documents in compliance with the ISO 19794-5 standards for full-frontal images. The solution's easy-to-use graphical user interface enables users to both review and manage portrait characteristics, such as lighting, skin colour, hot spots, and sharpness, to ensure that all the image requirements are met.

After the acquisition of the biometric image, FaceVACS-DBScan can support the ID issuance procedure by detecting duplicate entries in photo databases—an extremely important tool for government agencies issuing ID documents.

"Cognitec's FaceVACS-DBScan can also be used for face recognition applications in law enforcement, as its ability to accurately scan databases with millions of images in seconds allows it to compare facial images and identify a person, irrespective of age, hairstyle, and facial hair," noted Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Nandini Ghosh.

FaceVACS-DBScan enhances the quality of the original image to simplify comparisons. It uses a pose normalization filter that leverages 3D technology to create frontal views that better match the database images. Besides, FaceVACS-DBScan incorporates various filters that can compensate for quality issues common in images collected from mobile phones or video footage.

Cognitec is preparing the release of pioneering face recognition technology, both hardware and software, for border control solutions. A central component of the eGates, FaceVACS-Entry automatically captures a portrait image of the passenger entering the gate. The technology instantly compares the image to the passport photo in order to verify the identity of the passenger. Cognitec has optimized the system to ensure efficiency and ease of use for the passenger while capturing best-quality images that guarantee high verification accuracy, thus fully complying with guidelines published by the European Border Police (Frontex).

In addition to its focus on innovation and technology, Cognitec offers unmatched value through its efficient customer support services. Engineers working from the company's offices in Germany, the United States and Australia support customers and partners around the clock.

Cognitec also offers a software development kit, the FaceVACS-SDK, which helps customers design new face recognition applications in line with their specific needs. The company recently introduced a software development kit for Android devices, which is extremely useful to the police and the military, as they need to identify suspects anywhere, anytime. Through this application, Cognitec facilitates the migration of face recognition technologies from computers to mobile phones, which can prove highly advantageous in future.

"Cognitec's superior capabilities in facial biometrics have allowed it to emerge as the vendor of choice for large governmental and security agencies across the globe," noted Ravi. "The company's solutions also hold significant potential in newer applications such as the banking and retail sectors."

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to a company that has demonstrated excellence in implementing strategies that proactively create value for its customers with a focus on improving the return on the investment that customers make in its services or products. The award recognizes the company's inordinate focus on enhancing the value that its customers receive, beyond simply good customer service, leading to improved customer retention and ultimately customer base expansion.

Frost & Sullivan's Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development.
