IBM Receives Frost & Sullivan Customer Value Leadership Award for its Mobile Identity and Access Management Solutions

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of mobile authentication, Frost & Sullivan recognizes IBM with the 2014 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Leadership. Central to the company's success in generating value for customers is the integration of various mobile security, mobile identity, and access management solutions. IBM's strong value proposition with regards to the provisioning of context-based authentication for multiple mobile device types and mobile applications has also been instrumental to its success.

"When it comes to identity and access management, organizations often face a trade-off between improving security levels and delivering greater end-user convenience," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Mario Fernandez. "IBM breaks the security/end-user convenience trade-off through its IBM Security Access Manager for Mobile appliance."

The IBM Security Access Manager for Mobile appliance's risk engine determines the risk of an end user's authentication attempt by comparing it with a historical behavior profile of that user, which contains information related to the volume, type and frequency of transactions; Internet protocol reputation; geographic location; and device fingerprinting. On ascertaining the risk, the appropriate authentication method is applied. While low-risk access attempts require simple authentication methods such as a password, high-risk access attempts might involve hardware or software one-time password tokens.

To determine the appropriate authentication method, the IBM Security Access Manager for Mobile risk engine also pays heed to the application or data that the end user wants to access. For instance, if an end user wants to access a business-critical application or confidential data, then they must use an authentication method with a high degree of irrefutability. Essentially then, security becomes context-based and organizations can establish—and seamlessly enforce—access management policies without introducing greater end-user inconvenience.

The value proposition of IBM's Security Access Manager for Mobile appliance is enhanced through the integration of other IBM products, including IBM Security Access Manager for Web, which adds content security capabilities to protect against attacks such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting. Likewise, IBM's Federated Identity Manager, which supports the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), WS-Federation and OpenID standard protocols, can enable federated single sign-on. This facilitates the integration of cloud services, such as Google Apps or Office 365, which also support the above-mentioned protocols.

In a bid to remain ahead of its competitors, IBM added two important security companies and their corresponding products to its portfolio in 2013—Trusteer and Fiberlink. The company has also drawn up a future-proof product roadmap that recognizes that biometric authentication methods and contactless technologies will play a prominent role in enabling mobile access.

"Already, IBM's scientists have developed an algorithm to determine biometric-based authentication risk scores and risk analysis that can be incorporated into IBM Security Access Manager for Mobile," said Fernandez.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that demonstrates excellence in implementing strategies that proactively create value for its customers with a focus on improving the return on the investment that customers make in its services or products. This award recognizes the company's inordinate focus on enhancing the value that its customers receive, beyond simply good customer service, leading to improved customer retention and, ultimately, customer base expansion.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.

NexID Receives Grants to Fund Further Development, Commercialization of Biometric 'Liveness Detection'

POTSDAM, N.Y., April 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NexID Biometrics LLC, whose "liveness detection" technology boosts protection in applications with critical security-authentication needs, today announced it has received a series of funding grants totaling $325,000, including a highly competitive award given to emerging companies in central New York state.

NexID, the first company to offer liveness detection software for fingerprint-sensors on mobile devices, said the grants will fund further research, development and commercialization of additional modes of authentication that go beyond its deep expertise in detecting and mitigating attempts to spoof fingerprint scanners used for authenticating entry to secure locations and systems.

NexID will participate with Clarkson University here and West Virginia University in the joint research into biometric security technology sponsored by the National Science Foundation and gain the right to license technology that results from that research. NexID is a venture "spinout" from both institutions, with several of the company's founders serving on their faculty.

To expand the NSF-funded work at Clarkson and WVU, NexID has received a matching grant of $100,000 from Seaway Private Equity Corporation (SPEC) to develop a commercial liveness-detection application for security systems that scan people's faces and the irises in human eyes.  SPEC provides early stage equity capital funding for companies in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., with significant growth potential.

NexID also received a $150,000 Grant for Growth from the Syracuse-based CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity (CEO), which will be augmented by another matching grant from SPEC in the amount of $75,000.  The CenterState CEO grant to NexID was one of only two organizations awarded from among scores of companies that applied for funding.

"We expect this funding to extend and accelerate our operations through the two to three years it may take before NexID begins to realize royalty revenue from the licensing of our technology in these new areas," said Dr. Stephanie Schuckers, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clarkson University and CEO of NexID.

Privately held, NexID has operated organically since 2007 by licensing the use of its software to makers of traditional fingerprint-scanning systems to authenticate users at international border crossings and to gain access to laptops, systems and secure locations.  NexID's research into spoofing techniques and liveness detection software raises the effectiveness of fingerprint-scanning systems to over 95 percent.

The introduction of fingerprint scanning in popular smartphones, such as Apple's iPhone 5S with TouchID and Samsung's Galaxy S® 5, has caused the market for scanner-equipped mobile devices – and the need to safeguard them from spoofing -- to explode.  Meanwhile, heightened concerns for security around the world are driving global demand for additional modes of biometric authentication.

"We're proud of the renowned expertise in biometrics and cyber security that Dr. Schuckers and NexID bring to Clarkson," said University President Anthony Collins, Ph. D.  "It's an honor for our institution to be associated so closely with their leadership in this highly specialized area.

"Further, as a member of the Seaway Private Equity Corporation's Board of Directors, I'm pleased to see that NexID, truly a global center of excellence in biometrics technology here in the northern New York region, is receiving matching funds to further leverage this opportunity for growth," Collins said.

About NexID Biometrics
NexID Biometrics is a leading software and technology supplier to the biometric-authentication industry. The company develops and licenses liveness detection software that enables fingerprint-scanning technologies to more accurately, and with greater confidence, authenticate scanned images by mitigating spoof-related risks. The results of this large and successful experiment have provided the foundation for identifying potential biomarker signatures for patients with MS. Based on the initial progress, Regulus and Biogen Idec will now work on the next phase of the research collaboration to validate further the microRNA biomarker signatures in patients with relapse-remitting MS, the most common form of the disease.

"We are very excited about our early success in this collaboration and are hopeful that our efforts advance Biogen Idec's work in treating MS," said Neil W. Gibson, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer of Regulus. "Further, we believe that achievement of this milestone assigns significant value to our proprietary technology and demonstrates the potential of our emerging biomarkers platform to support our microRNA therapeutic pipeline." Regulus believes that microRNA biomarkers may be used to select optimal patient segments in clinical trials, to develop companion diagnostics, and to monitor disease progression or relapse.

In August 2012, Regulus entered into a research collaboration with Biogen Idec to explore microRNAs as biomarkers for disease monitoring and response to therapy. In June 2013, Regulus and Biogen Idec amended the collaboration agreement to update the research plan and criteria for success. The collaboration is initially focused on the discovery of microRNAs as biomarkers for MS. Under the transaction, Regulus has received an upfront payment and has earned an initial milestone payment and is also eligible to receive additional milestone payments. Additionally, Biogen Idec made an investment in Regulus in the form of a promissory note that converted into shares of Regulus' common stock upon the closing of the Company's initial public offering in October 2012.

About microRNAs and microRNAs as Biomarkers

The discovery of microRNAs in humans during the last decade is one of the most exciting scientific breakthroughs in recent history. microRNAs are small RNA molecules, typically 20 to 25 nucleotides in length, that do not encode proteins but instead regulate gene expression. More than 500 microRNAs have been identified in the human genome, and over one-third of all human genes are believed to be regulated by microRNAs. microRNA expression, or function, has been shown to be significantly altered or dysregulated in many disease states, including oncology, fibrosis and metabolic diseases. Regulus believes that microRNAs are clinically relevant therapeutic targets and may be ideally suited as biomarkers for these disease states and others, like MS.

microRNAs have been detected in bodily fluids such as blood, and emerging data has demonstrated that microRNA signatures in blood can mimic the expression profile observed in disease tissues. Regulus has a comprehensive intellectual property estate and oligonucleotide technology know-how and believes that microRNA biomarkers may be used to select optimal patient segments in clinical trials, to develop companion diagnostics, and to monitor disease progression or relapse.
