(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130307/600769 )

TechNavio's analysts forecast the Global Cancer Biomarkers market to grow at a CAGR of 18.22 percent over the period 2012-2016. One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is the increasing prevalence of cancer. The Global Cancer Biomarkers market has also been witnessing the trend of the emergence of personalized medicines. However, the poor regulatory and reimbursement systems could pose a challenge to the growth of this market.

The key vendors dominating this market space are Abbott Laboratories, Affymetrix, Inc., Agilent Technologies Inc., Gen-Probe Inc., Hologic, Inc., and Roche Diagnostics Corp.

The other vendors mentioned in the report are Agendia BV, Ambrilia Biopharma, Astellas Pharma US Inc., Morphotek, Inc., Gen-Probe, Inc., Veridex LLC, Morphotek, Inc., Immunomedics, Inc., Clarient, Inc.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from TechNavio's Healthcare team said: ''Over the years, personalized medicines have gained significant popularity because they enable the medical profession to provide customized treatment to patients. Personalized medicines are increasingly being used in targeted cancer therapies. As personalized medicines gain more importance and popularity, the demand for biomarkers is expected to increase. In the coming years, as personalized medicines become more popular, conventional approaches will automatically become obsolete.''

Further, the report reveals that one of the key challenges is the existence of poor regulatory and reimbursement systems.

Kurt H. Becker Named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Dec. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Kurt H. Becker, the associate provost for research and technology initiatives and a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly), has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Becker was chosen by the NAI for his spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society. His pioneering work with atmospheric-pressure cold plasmas paved the way for new, more effective methods of sterilizing medical instruments and other biomedical and environmental applications, and he holds numerous patents on his discoveries.

Since joining NYU-Poly in 2007, Becker has been instrumental in helping the Institute translate its mission of Invention, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (i2e) into action. He is the academic lead for PowerBridgeNY, a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)-sponsored proof of concept center, which will leverage clean-energy innovations emerging from institutional research labs to create more and stronger businesses in New York State. He is also the NYU-Poly academic lead in the Northeastern Regional Node of the National Science Foundation's Innovation Corps (I-Corps), a joint program with CUNY (lead) and Columbia University that prepares academic researchers to become entrepreneurs and speeds the commercialization of their research.

NYU-Poly is home to some of the top university business incubators in the world, and Becker serves as a valuable liaison between faculty members and the incubators' staff and companies. Additionally, he was one of the creators of the school's popular Inno/Vention competition--now in its seventh year--which challenges NYU–Poly and NYU students from across the globe to prototype and develop commercially viable ideas for real-world problems.

NYU-Poly President Katepalli R. Sreenivasan said, "As an NAI Fellow, Kurt Becker takes his place among an august company. We are proud that the organization has recognized, as we do at New York University, that Dr. Becker exemplifies the spirit of innovation and invention. We consider him an enormous credit to the Institute and are grateful for all his work on our behalf."

The 143 innovators elected to NAI Fellow status represent 94 universities and governmental and non-profit research institutes. Together, they hold more than 5,600 U.S. patents. Included in the 2013 class are 26 presidents and senior leadership of research universities and non-profit research institutes, 69 members of the National Academies, five inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, six recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation, two recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Science, and nine Nobel laureates.

The NAI Fellows will be inducted by Deputy U.S. Commissioner for Patents Andy Faile during the NAI's 3rd Annual Conference on Mar. 7, 2014, in Alexandria, Va., at the headquarters of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Becker is a professor in two NYU-Poly academic departments, Applied Physics and of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He holds master's and doctoral degrees in physics from Germany's Universitaet des Saarlandes. He is an honorary professor at the Leopold-Franzens Universitaet, in Innsbruck, Austria. His many other honors include the Dr. Eduard-Martin Prize for Excellence in Research, a fellowship in the American Physical Society, and the 2007 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award, and the SASP Erwin Schroedinger medal of the University of Innsbruck.

The Polytechnic Institute of New York University (formerly the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and the Polytechnic University, now widely known as NYU-Poly) is an affiliated institute of New York University, soon to be its School of Engineering. NYU-Poly, founded in 1854, is the nation's second-oldest private engineering school. It is presently a comprehensive school of education and research in engineering and applied sciences, rooted in a 159-year tradition of invention, innovation and entrepreneurship. It remains on the cutting edge of technology, innovatively extending the benefits of science, engineering, management and liberal studies to critical real-world opportunities and challenges, especially those linked to urban systems, health and wellness, and the global information economy. In addition to its programs on the main campus in New York City at MetroTech Center in downtown Brooklyn, it offers programs around the globe remotely through NYUe-Poly. NYU-Poly is closely connected to engineering in NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai and to the NYU Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) also at MetroTech, while operating two incubators in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn. DigitalPersona FingerJet Recognition Engine Top Performer in Recent MINEX Testing

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- DigitalPersona, Inc., a trusted partner for biometric identity verification solutions, today announced that the DigitalPersona® FingerJet® Recognition Engine matching elements have been certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the MINEX (Minutia Exchange) testing program to meet the United States Government's Personal Identity Verification (PIV) standards.  The DigitalPersona FingerJet Recognition Engine feature extractor had been certified by NIST in earlier testing. These two certifications assure that fingerprint templates obtained by the DigitalPersona FingerJet Recognition Engine are interoperable across other certified extraction and matching engines.

Ensuring interoperability of fingerprint technology components has become essential as the use of fingerprints for strong authentication and identity is more widespread.  The MINEX test confirms matching performance of standards-based (INCITS 378) fingerprint templates when tested across vendors and validates performance of fingerprint engines using tens of thousands of fingerprint images in government databases.

As of December 2013, 68 vendors have submitted fingerprint feature extraction and/or matching engines for testing.  The result of testing has confirmed that the DigitalPersona FingerJet Recognition Engine is in the top 10% of all tested engines, both for absolute performance and mean and median accuracy when interoperating with other compliant engines.

"A unique property of our engine is its use in low-cost, embedded processors without compromise in accuracy or responsiveness," said Vance Bjorn, CTO and vice president of corporate development at DigitalPersona. "This has enabled DigitalPersona's engine to be one of the most widely deployed engines for fingerprint authentication. More than 200M people rely on DigitalPersona's fingerprint technology and products in commercial authentication applications."

The MINEX results can be found here.

KaloBios Announces Preliminary Phase 1 Results in Advanced Hematologic Malignancies with KB004, an Anti-EphA3 Monoclonal Antibody

KaloBios logo. (PRNewsFoto/KaloBios)jwplayer.key="2kY/GKwZ2uQZmDlQ9VYArfZt2b4+KhHX3+DM4zisgtE=";SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Dec. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: KBIO) today announced preliminary results of an ongoing multi-center Phase 1 study of KB004, an anti-EphA3 monoclonal antibody (mAb), which the company is developing as a treatment for hematologic malignancies. Forty-four patients with refractory disease or who were unfit for chemotherapy have been enrolled in the dose escalation portion of the study.  The experimental patient-targeted therapeutic has been well tolerated, with initial evidence of clinical activity.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130225/MM66380LOGO)

Preliminary results of the study were presented yesterday by lead investigator, Jeffrey E. Lancet, M.D. of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, Tampa, Florida at the 55th American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting and Exhibition (ASH), held this week in New Orleans, Louisiana.

"We are encouraged by the results seen with KB004 to date, which has been well-tolerated at doses up to 190 mg, with mild to moderate transient infusion reactions the most common toxicity," said Dr. Lancet. "There are some signs of activity as well, including a patient with relapsed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who had sustained remission for over 1 year."

Escalating doses of KB004 were administered as a 1 or 2 hour infusion on days 1, 8, and 15 of a 21 day cycle at incremental doses of 20, 40, 70, 100, 140, 190 and 250 mg and will thereafter increase at 33% increments up to a planned maximum of 700 mg. The primary study objective is to determine a maximum tolerated dose, which has not yet been reached. Secondary objectives included evaluation of pharmacokinetics, immunogenicity and clinical activity. The investigators also evaluated EphA3 expression on tumor, stromal and endothelial cells.

Nestor Molfino, M.D., MSc, KaloBios' Chief Medical Officer, commented, "KB004 targets EphA3, which is expressed in adults on hematologic malignancies and solid tumors, including tumor stem cells, but not on normal blood or bone marrow stem cells. The targeted nature of this antibody may represent a promising approach to selectively treat patients with hematologic malignancies. As we have not yet reached a maximum tolerated dose, we will continue to study higher doses of KB004 as part of this ongoing trial to determine an optimum high-end dose for the Phase 2 expansion portion of the study in patients with AML or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) which is expected to begin by the end of the year."

The poster presented at ASH can be viewed on the KaloBios website.

About KaloBios

KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is developing a portfolio of proprietary, patient-targeted, first-in-class monoclonal antibodies designed to treat severe life-threatening or debilitating diseases for which there is an unmet medical need, with a clinical focus on severe respiratory diseases and cancer.

Currently, KaloBios has three drug development programs:

KB003, an anti-GM-CSF mAb with potential to treat inflammatory diseases, being developed for the treatment of severe asthma. Enrollment of 160 patients has been completed in a Phase 2 study in the United States, Europe and Australia. KB001-A, an anti-PcrV mAb fragment, partnered exclusively with Sanofi Pasteur and is being developed for the prevention and treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) infection. KaloBios has retained rights for the cystic fibrosis indication and is conducting a 180 patient Phase 2 study in CF subjects with chronic Pa lung infection in the United States.  KaloBios has received Orphan Drug designation from both the U.S. FDA and the European Medicines Agency for KB001-A for the treatment of Pa lung infection in CF patients. Sanofi is pursuing a ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention indication in the intensive care setting, an indication which has received U.S. FDA Fast Track Designation. KB004, an anti-EphA3 mAb, has potential in treating hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. KaloBios is currently testing this drug in a Phase 1 study in subjects with hematologic malignancies. All of the company's antibodies were generated using its proprietary Humaneered® technology, a method that converts nonhuman antibodies (typically mouse) into recombinant antibodies that have a high binding affinity to their target and are designed for chronic therapeutic use. The company believes that antibodies produced using its Humaneered® technology offer important clinical and economic advantages over antibodies generated by other methods in terms of high binding affinity, high manufacturing yields, and minimal to no immunogenicity (inappropriate immune response) upon repeat administration in humans.
